The library at the Academy of St. Adalbert has a long history of playing an essential role in student academics. It was founded in 1967 with books from St. Josaphat and a State of Ohio grant, and quicky grew to serve the entire school. Today, with over 10,000 holdings, a completely renovated environment, and a web-based card catalog, the library is well-suited to continue its mission of enriching the lives of academy students.

At different grade levels, students learn library skills which enable them to be better learners and researchers. The library assists with supporting and enriching the curriculum of the school and fostering a love of reading.

Accelerated Reader

The library also offers a powerful reading management application called Accelerated Reader^TM. Accelerated Reader^TM is designed to focus children's attention on careful reading of books to build critical thinking and literacy skills development. By matching the child to the appropriate reading level of books, students are individually kept in a challenging, but not frustrating, skills development zone. Accelerated Reader^TM has been scientifically proven to dramatically improve student reading skills. Click here for more information about the research that has been conducted.

Through student quizzes, Accelerated Reader also provides teachers with an easy and effective way to monitor all forms of guided reading practice. Teachers receive detailed, objective data to target instruction and ensure success for every student, from emergent reader through eighth grade.

With Accelerated Reader, teachers can:

Get students excited about reading and vocabulary. Students will be motivated to read constantly - during recess, at lunch, at home, everywhere! They'll read carefully, thoroughly, and always be eager for more.

Receive reliable, objective information. Teachers will get valuable data on students' library book reading, literacy skills development, vocabulary development, and more, so they can help them become better readers.

Help every student master standards. With Accelerated Reader, students read more, thereby becoming more well read students. Scores improve on state tests and more students master standards - research proves it.

Improve students' attitudes for learning. Enthusiasm for reading spreads to all subjects as students experience success. Teachers using Accelerated Reader report higher attendance, fewer discipline problems, and improved attitudes about school.

Student Reads a Book. Students choose books at their appropriate reading levels and read them at their own pace.

Student Takes a Quiz. The Academy of St. Adalbert offers over 1,000 quizzes to help motivate and monitor increased reading practice.

You Get Information. You get immediate information feedback on the reading and vocabulary progress of each student.

Scholastic Book Fairs

Scholastic Book Fairs are the library's main source of funding. The Fall Fair is in October and the Spring Fair is in March. A two day "Buy One, Get One Free" Fair that coincides with Cultural Arts Night is held in May. Watch Family Mail for flyers announcing the Book Fairs and requests for volunteers.

One for Books Program

The Academy of St. Adalbert has an opportunity to bring more books to our students at our Buy One, Get One Free Scholastic Book Fair May 21st & 22nd. It's called One for Books.

Participation is easy. Donate just $1 and sign the Book Slip (see link below) with your name or child's name so we can display it at our Book Fair. All of the money you give goes directly to the purchase of books for our academy!

Your dollar also goes beyond our academy. Scholastic Book Fairs will match the One for Books dollars we raise with a donation of up to a million books to three nonprofit programs devoted to improving reading skills among children: Kids in Distressed Situations, National Center for Family Literacy, and Toys for Tots.

Please send your dollar and signed Book Slip back to school with your child. On behalf of the students of the Academy of St. Adalbert, THANK YOU for your support!

BOGO Book Fair 5/21 & 22

Our Buy One Get One FREE! Scholastic Book Fair will be held Wednesday, May 21^st & Thursday, May 22^nd and you don't want to miss it! The Fair will be open during school hours and Thursday evening from 6:00 to 8:00pm during Cultural Arts Night. For every item purchased, you can choose another of equal or lesser value for FREE! This is a great opportunity to stock up on summer reading titles.

How the Book Fair Works

It connects students to books they want to read at affordable prices (most are $4 to $10).

To help students find the best books, they will preview the Fair on Monday and bring home a "Wish List" of their favorites. You can also make a "Wish List" with your child online at our custom Book Fair website. Just click on the link above.

Students may purchase books during their preview and on their regular library day. They may also ask their teacher for permission to visit the Fair any day that they bring money.

How You Can Participate

Back by popular demand is "Lunch with Someone You Love." Parents and other loved ones are invited to have lunch with students either day during the Fair. As a "loved one," you can bring a lunch (fast food is allowed) and sign in at the office at 11:30 a.m. You'll eat in the Fr. Keller Center with your child(ren) at a special table and visit the Fair during recess.

You can help our teachers increase their classroom library with the Classroom Wish List. Just select one or more Donation Cards from the display. The titles are hand picked by our teachers. Take the Donation Card and book to the cashier. Once purchased, your child can fill out a bookplate and present the book to his or her teacher.

You can help our academy library and needy children with One for Books. Book Slips will be available at the Fair for $1.

You can still volunteer. If you have an hour to spare, call Susan Walton at 440-234-5529 (days) or 440-234-2906 (evenings).

As you can see, our Book Fair promises to be a fun-filled event for literacy and proceeds will benefit our academy library. I urge you to attend, and look forward to seeing you there!

Book Fair Volunteers Needed

Our Buy One Get One Free! Scholastic Book Fair is almost here. On Wednesday, May 21^st & Thursday, May 22^nd our academy will participate in this exciting event during school hours. We will also have evening hours on Thursday from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. which coincides with Cultural Arts Night. So come early and shop the Fair!

The Buy One Get One Free! Book Fair is Scholastic's way of saying thank you to our academy. You'll leave the Fair with twice as many books for summer reading!

At this time, we are looking for volunteers to help before, during and after the Fair. We expect to be especially busy because this is only a two day event. We need help with the following:

Coordinating volunteers
Setting up the Fair
Cashiers
Helping students select books for purchase
Packing up the Fair
