Enriching the Student's Experience through Extracurriculars

During the academic year, opportunities for students to enrich their experience are wide and varied.

Academic enrichment classes includes art, classroom music, physical education, computing, Spanish language, and religious and sacramental programs.

Academic extracurricular competitions include GCCMT math, St. Ed's Classroom of Champions, the annual science fair (winners compete within the district at St. Edwards and regionally at the University of Akron), Diocesan Spelling Bee, National Geography Bee, and the Computerized Thinking Cap Quiz Bowl.

In Music, Instrumental Band and Choir are offered to all students. Students perform in Winter and Spring concerts.

Drama and Fine Arts are encouraged through two full-school theatre productions and fine art exhibitions. Students also visit the Cleveland Museum of Art, the Palace or State Theatre, the Cleveland Playhouse, and the Western Reserve Historical Society. A theatrical or ministry group often performs in school for students.

Extracurricular athletics include intramural (K - 3rd grade) and CYO (4th - 8th grade) soccer, volleyball, basketball, football, wrestling, fast-pitch softball, baseball, bowling and cheerleading. For St. Adalbert Athletic Boosters information, click here.

Extracurricular student and social organizations include Girl and Boy Scouts, the school newspaper, SMAD - Students Making A Difference, Ski Club, the Young Astronauts program at NASA, and community service events that bring students together with each other and the community.

Students Making a Difference (SMAD) In our Academy, every discipline integrates the social justice principles of the Catholic Church. The Catholic student is taught specifically to care for the needy and those marginalized in society through projects and programs. At the Academy of St. Adalbert, we have SMAD - Students Making A Difference. In this organization composed of 4th - 8th graders, our students are learning the importance of volunteering their talents and participating in numerous charitable works to help them understand their role as Catholic Christians in society.

During Catholic Schools Week, our 8th graders went up against the teachers in the annual volleyball game. Both teams played a great game and the teachers were victorious.

During Catholic Schools Week, all academy students in preschool through 8th grade enjoyed a day of bowling at Brookgate Lanes for Student Appreciation Day.

Disability Awareness

During the month of January, our students learned a lot about how others WALK WITH JESUS as they face various challenges in their lives. Our 7th and 8th graders, under the direction of their teachers, Mrs. Sebastian and Mrs. Bernardone, developed PowerPoint presentations about various disabilities which they shared with the rest of the students in our school. They shared information on Down Syndrome, Autism, Muscular Dystrophy, Tourette's Syndrome, Attention Deficit Disorder, and Dwarfism. Talyah Bernardone, an alumnus of the Academy of St. Adalbert and currently a student at John Carroll University, shared her journey with muscular dystrophy.

In addition, stations were set up in the gym where students were able to experience various physical and learning disabilities:

Hearing Impaired - sign language

Visual Impairment - walking without sight

Physical Disability - wheelchair/no use of arms (coloring with feet)

Learning Disability - seeing words as a dyslexic person sees them

All School Bowling Field Trip

On Thursday, February 4th, the students will be attending an "all school" bowling field trip to celebrate Catholic Schools Week! We thought it would be a nice way to encourage all of the students to participate in a fun activity together.

The bowling trip will be from 10:00-1:00 at Brookgate Lanes, which is located in Brookpark, Ohio on Snow Road. The cost of the field trip is $10.00 for each student. The students will be provided with 2 hours of bowling, shoe rental, and a hotdog lunch with french fries and a drink. They will be transported to Brookgate Lanes and back to school by school bus.

The Science Fair will take place at the Academy of St. Adalbert on January 7^th. Please join us in the Keller Center from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. to see all the fascinating experiments our students conducted.

Christmas Musical 2009 Details

Dear Parents/Guardians,

We are excited to announce that our Kindergarten through 8^th Grades will be performing "It All Happened in the Country." It is a cute musical about some city kids getting stuck out in the Country on Christmas Eve. They learn about the first Christmas from Uncle Yule.

Our Christmas Musical is on Thursday, December 10, 2009 at 7:00pm in Keller Center. The doors will open at 6:30pm - Students must be in their classrooms by 6:45pm.

The students will need to wear:

The Kindergarten, First and Second grade students are Country Cousins. They may wear plaid shirts or solid red, white and green shirts, Overalls or jeans, tennis shoes or boots, pigtails and freckles.

The Third and Fourth grade students are Angels.

They may wear an Angel costume or a white shirt with dark blue or black dress pants (please no jeans) and school shoes. We have angel wings and hallos for the children if they need them.

The Fifth, Sixth, Seventh and Eighth grade students are City Kids.

They may wear clean, neat jeans with solid red, white or green shirts and tennis shoes, sunglasses and a baseball cap.

The Students that have a speaking line will be a Country Cousin or a City Kid. Please follow the guidelines above.

If you have any extra Christmas shopping bags, Christmas wrapped boxes, and Gold or silver garlin for the musical. Please send them in to school before December 1^st. Also, If anyone is interested in building a stage prop (barn) please e-mail me (mcwetter@gmail.com) or call the school.

We look forward to seeing you on December 10, 2009! This information is very important so please keep this letter so you have it for future reference.
