Enriching the Student's Experience through Extracurriculars

During the academic year, opportunities for students to enrich their experience are wide and varied.

Academic enrichment classes includes art, classroom music, physical education, computing, Spanish language, and religious and sacramental programs.

Academic extracurricular competitions include GCCMT math, St. Ed's Classroom of Champions, the annual science fair (winners compete within the district at St. Edwards and regionally at the University of Akron), Diocesan Spelling Bee, National Geography Bee, and the Computerized Thinking Cap Quiz Bowl.

In Music, Instrumental Band and Choir are offered to all students. Students perform in Winter and Spring concerts.

Drama and Fine Arts are encouraged through two full-school theatre productions and fine art exhibitions. Students also visit the Cleveland Museum of Art, the Palace or State Theatre, the Cleveland Playhouse, and the Western Reserve Historical Society. A theatrical or ministry group often performs in school for students.

Extracurricular athletics include intramural (K - 3rd grade) and CYO (4th - 8th grade) soccer, volleyball, basketball, football, wrestling, fast-pitch softball, baseball, bowling and cheerleading. The Catholic student is taught specifically to care for the needy and those marginalized in society through projects and programs. At the Academy of St. Adalbert, we have SMAD - Students Making A Difference. In this organization composed of 4th - 8th graders, our students are learning the importance of volunteering their talents and participating in numerous charitable works to help them understand their role as Catholic Christians in society.

2008 Global Issues Seminar

Seventh and eighth graders from many Northeast Ohio schools participated in the 2008 Global Issues Seminar at Kent State University on Wednesday, March 12, 2008. Each participating school sent one or two teams to the seminar who represented an assigned country in the United Nations General Assembly.

The following students attended from the Academy of St. Adalbert in Berea: Ashley Agerter, Niko Bernardone, Alexa Graziolli, Brett Polcyn and Ashley Rote. These students represented Lebanon in the General Assembly. Mrs. Jane Bernardone planned the trip for Quest students in Grades 7 & 8. Mr. John Pymn accompanied the students on the trip, as well as Mr. Bob Keller. Please see Photo.

Kent State University's students and staff served as group facilitators. The middle school students determined from their assigned nation's point of view how the world's resources should be spent on stopping terrorism, educating the world's children, fighting poverty, controlling HIV / AIDS, and protecting the environment and basic human rights around the globe.

Students at the Academy of St. Adalbert felt the trip was very educational. One of their favorite parts was when they were able to meet a representative from Lebanon. She was very impressed with the student's research and presentations. The second part the students liked was when they broke up into groups to discuss the issue the students had research. During that section, students discussed issues with the other schools.

This model UN program is also conducted annually at Seton Hall University in South Orange, New Jersey, and beginning next winter in Las Vegas, Nevada as well. The program is co-sponsored by the College of Education, Health and Human Services at Kent State University.

Students received a flag from Lebanon. The flag, picture and the student's poster is on display in the 8th grade home room. Please stop by and see it.

2008 Spelling Bee Information

School Spelling Bees: April 18, 2008

1. The word for each child will be pronounced correctly. The word will be used in a sentence for grades 1 -4. In grades 5 - 8 the word will be used in a sentence for clarification or if the student asks.

Child says word <30 seconds>.

Child spells word <30 seconds>.

Child says word again.

*Speak loud and clear.

*Students should ask if they didn't recognize the word.

2. If the word is a homonym: it will be used in a sentence automatically.

3. Retracing, (stopping and starting over), is allowed as long as students do not change what they are repeating.

4. Misspelled words - The judge says "Sorry, that is incorrect." The next word is given to the next speller.

5. No talking is allowed among contestants.

6. Elimination Process (between final two spellers):

*When a word is misspelled, the next speller receives the same word. If he/she spells it correctly, the first speller receives one more word. If the word is spelled correctly there is a winner. If not, the process is repeated.

7. Before beginning to spell a student may ask for a definition of the word for clarification. He/She can also ask for a sentence and/or for the word to be repeated.

Ski/Snowboard Club Facts

The final deadline for joining Ski/Snowboard Club is December 14th. Please call Mrs. Nedbalski ASAP at 440-734-6575 if you are interested in joining.

We will ski every Wednesday, after school, during January and February, beginning January 9th, for 8weeks.

Students are driven to the ski center by parent volunteers. We ask that parents with students in Ski Club please let us know if you can drive, or take a turn at driving. The Club has been small enough in the past that a few parents have been all that's needed to take all of the students. The advisors will be staying with the students, and parent drivers may stay also.

Just because there is no snow in your yard does not mean that there is no snow on the slopes. They are making snow whenever the temperature drops.

Students will come off the slopes by 7pm. Any student not following this rule will need to sit at the table for a 15 minute period at the start of the next ski week session. We hate this rule too, but we NEED to leave the ski area by 7:15 so that we can arrive back to school on time. There will be parents waiting back at school.

Students need to come to school on Wednesday mornings with ALL of their ski clothes and equipment. Most important are GLOVES AND HATS. Goggles, a neck gator is preferred over a scarf, and layers of non-cotton clothing are needed to have an enjoyable time. A layer of long johns, then sweats, then ski bibs for padding are all ideal. A pair of nylon socks under ski/thermal socks should keep their feet warm. Dressing in layers will keep them toasty. A pair of jeans only gets wet and stays wet and cold. Please be sure the outer layer will shed water to keep them dry. Be sure the layer next to their skin will wick away the moisture-so all cotton is not a good choice. The sporting goods dept. of all major stores carries cold weather gear at a discount.

Students will change into their ski clothes at school, before leaving for the slopes. They will take all of their belongings into the car they will be traveling in and they are strongly encouraged to do their homework on the ride to the slopes. They may even sit at the table with the advisors to work on homework if they prefer to cut their skiing time short that evening. Ski club is not an excuse for not doing homework.

Students may pack a sandwich/snack and beverage, or bring money to buy food at the concession. Please be sure they are prepared for the day. Let us know if they need any medications to take with them.

We will return to school, to the east area of the parking lot, by 8pm. Please be prompt in picking up your child, they will be tired and anxious to relax.

Typically, we arrive at the slopes and are greeted by our ski club moderator. The students will get their equipment, with help if needed, then secure all shoes and extras. Ideally they should go out for the first lessons before the other school clubs arrive. Lessons last for 1 hour and then we ask the students to come back into the lodge to rest and eat. They may then go back outside with their ski buddy and practice what they have learned. They must NEVER ski without a friend.

Students may ONLY ski on the slopes the instructor has deemed them qualified for after having successfully passed a lesson.

WE NEED A PHONE NUMBER THAT YOU CAN BE REACHED AT.

You are invited to participate in the Annual "Light Up Berea" Parade, to be held on Thursday, December 6th, at 6p.m. We will meet by our float, behind City Hall (which is behind the Library and Police Dept., off South Rocky River Dr.) between 5:15 and 5:45p.m. The parade will start promptly at 6p.m. Children should wear any angel or shepherd costumes they might be given, by the office, over their coats. Have them dress appropriately for the weather. The tree lighting ceremony will follow after the parade on the triangle by the clock tower.

There are several public parking areas around the center of Berea, but if in doubt, there will be ample parking at St. Adalbert's. Please allow enough time to walk to City Hall down Front Street. The children and families will remain with the float until it returns to the starting point.

We would like to get an estimate for the number of students and families walking in the parade. Please click here to print a form to return to school with your number of participants. Students to be Mary and Joseph will then be chosen along with the shepherds and 3 Wise Men.

 						Thank you,
Mrs. Mary Lou Nedbalski
