Our Spring Scholastic Book Fair will be held Monday, March 15^th through Friday, March 19^th in the Academy Media Center. We will have evening hours on Friday from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. which coincides with the Parish Fish Fry. So come early and shop the Fair!

How the Book Fair Works

It connects students to books they want to read at affordable prices (most are $4 to $10).

To help students find the best books, they will preview the Fair on Monday and bring home a "Wish List" of their favorites. You can also make a "Wish List" with your child online at our custom Book Fair website. Just click on the link above.

Students may purchase books during their preview and on their regular library day. They may also ask their teacher for permission to visit the Fair any day that they bring money.

How You Can Participate

Back by popular demand is "Lunch with Someone You Love." Parents and other loved ones are invited to have lunch with students either day during the Fair. As a "loved one," you can bring a lunch (fast food is allowed) and sign in at the office at 11:30 a.m. You'll eat in the Fr. Keller Center with your child(ren) at a special table and visit the Fair during recess.

You can help our teachers increase their classroom library with the Classroom Wish List. Just select one or more Donation Cards from the display. The titles are hand picked by our teachers. Take the Donation Card and book to the cashier. Once purchased, your child can fill out a bookplate and present the book to his or her teacher.

You can help our academy library and needy children with One for Books. Book Slips will be available at the Fair for $1.

You can still volunteer. If you have an hour to spare, call Susan Walton at 440-234-5529 (days) or 440-234-2906 (evenings).

As you can see, our Book Fair promises to be a fun-filled event for literacy and proceeds will benefit our academy library. I urge you to attend, and look forward to seeing you there!

Setting up the Fair

Cashiers

Helping students select books for purchase

Packing up the Fair

Malley's Easter Candy Sale

Dear Parents/Guardians,

Although we are only a week into Lent, Easter will be here before we know it! Have you thought about the candy that you will put in your child's Easter basket? Well, we have found an easy way for you to purchase your Easter candy and help the Academy of St. Adalbert's science program.

Included in today's Family Mail is a brochure from Malley's chocolates. We will be selling Malley's candy as a fundraiser this year. ALL OF THE PROFITS FROM THIS SALE WILL BE USED TO PURCHASE SCIENCE MATERIALS FOR OUR STUDENTS TO USE. Our teachers would love to make science experiential and exciting for our students by allowing them to perform scientific experiments. Teaching science this way also promotes the critical thinking skills that our students need now and will need in the future. We are appreciative to our PTU for purchasing a science cart and we are looking forward to having the materials we need to make this cart more useful. That's where YOU come in!!

Our sale will begin today, Friday, February 26^th. Orders can be placed either by using the paper order form found in the middle of the brochure or online by going to register.malleys.com. The identification number that you will need to get started is printed in your brochure. You will be able to forward a website to all of your family and friends, down the street and around the world, asking them to help our school acquire the science materials we need. If you are ordering using the paper form, your orders must be received by Wednesday, March 17^th and can be picked up at school on Wednesday, March 24^th. However, if you choose to order online, orders may be placed until 11:59 p.m. on March 29^th. Orders placed online will be delivered directly to the address given.

Will there be prizes??? Of course, there will!

Malley's Chocolates is offering one free ticket to Cedar Point to any seller who has a total online sales of at least $200, not including shipping charges. Details can be found on the first page of the brochure.

The student with the highest amount of sales will win a $75 gift certificate of their choice, 2^nd highest seller will win a $50 gift certificate of their choice, and the 3^rd highest seller will win a $25 gift certificate of their choice.

Classrooms will be teamed as follows: Team Preschool/STEPS, 6^th grade, 4^th grade, 2^nd grade, 3^rd grade, Team 5-7-8, Team Kindergarten and 1^st grade. The team with the largest amount of candy sales will win a pizza and movie party.

If you choose to order using the paper form, orders can be returned to the school office beginning Monday, March 1^st through Wednesday, March 17^th. All checks should be made payable to The Academy of St. Adalbert.

Thank you to Mrs. Barb Victor who has graciously agreed to be the chairperson for our sale. We are looking forward to a very profitable sale that will help our school acquire the science materials we need! STEPS Parent Meeting - 3/15/10

Dear Parents/Guardians,

It is hard to believe that we are almost halfway through the third quarter, that Lent has begun, and that Easter is just six weeks away. However, the good news of the Easter Season is HOPE and we can all hope that warm weather is around the corner!

At the beginning of this school year, the Academy of St. Adalbert entered into a partnership with the STEPS Center for Excellence in Autism. This is a new model for Catholic education and is supportive of our philosophy that all children can learn. We have watched the students with autism grow both academically and socially and we have also watched our traditional students grow in compassion, kindness, and empathy. Our goal was to foster inclusion --- or "fitting in" --- by providing an education for all children in a compassionate, Christ-like environment. We feel that we are well on the road to providing an inclusive education for all children at the Academy.

Although we are pleased with our program, like any new venture, there have been some bumps in the road. Since this is our first year undertaking this task and since there isn't another model to look to for guidance, this year has been a time of trial and error and much discussion and assessment. To that end, the staffs of both the Academy of St. Adalbert and STEPS spent the entire inservice day on Friday, February 12^th assessing the program as it currently exists, discussing its strengths, and determining areas of improvement. We all left the meeting invigorated and more committed than ever to making this program a success!

At our first PTU meeting in September, Jennifer Might presented to those in attendance our vision for this new model at the Academy of St. Adalbert. For those who were able to attend, this a very informative meeting. Since we are more than half way through the school year, we believe that it is time to have another parent meeting to update you on our progress. Our goal for this meeting is to share information with you, to allow you to hear honest input from our Academy teachers and from the STEPS teachers, and to answer any questions you may have. This meeting will be held in the Keller Center on Monday, March 15, 2010 at 6:30 p.m. We hope many of you will be able to attend.

As always, thank you for sharing your children with us and for your patience and understanding as we travel uncharted waters. We are committed to work in partnership with our families to offer our children the best education possible in a Catholic school. We look forward to seeing you on March 15; if you have any questions or concerns before that time, feel free to contact one of us. May God continue to bless your families as we journey through Lent.

Program Description

SMAD (Students Making a Difference) sell Shamrocks to students, faculty and visitors.

Green Shamrocks sell for $1; Gold Shamrocks sell for $5.

Shamrocks may decorate the A.S.A. school or be sent to Talyah who visited our students to decorate her dorm room.

Purpose

To raise funds to continue research, patient care and services to those with neuromuscular disease.
To focus attention and increase public awareness of MDA and its purpose
To give the Academy of St. Adalbert a sense of community involvement.

AN MDA FAMILY SAYS THANK YOU FOR YOUR HELP!

Nineteen years ago our family's life was devastated with the news that our baby girl had muscular dystrophy. We didn't know at the time what life would be like for her. We didn't know if she would live or if she would ever walk. Thanks to the Muscular Dystrophy Association, we found help! They provide us with clinic visits where doctors continually monitor her care. They conduct research to find cures for the more than 40 different types of dystrophy. The MDA provides us with adaptive equipment for our home, car, etc. They also have a wonderful support system in place where she can connect with other kids and as a family we can connect with others in situations similar to ours. Living with a debilitating disease can be uncertain, but the MDA has always been there for us. Our daughter is now in college. She continues to need some assistance, but she wouldn't be where she is today without the MDA. Please help us to help the MDA!
