How to do Simple Roofing Repairs

The common problems we encounter with tiled roofs are missing tiles, broken tiles and damage to the valley. These problems are due to natural tear and wear or natural disasters like storm. If you’re about to do a roof repair, keep in mind that it will depend on the type of shingle or tile is used. The tutorial we are going to share with you is about replacing a tile.  

Step 1: Cut the Tile  

Use a saw to the cut shakes and wooden shingles. For cutting the asphalt shingles, use a utility knife. Use an angle grinder to cut the concrete tiles and clay. For scoring the slates, run a sharp line along the line and snapped it. You can also split it apart by using an edge of a trowel to tap the scored line.  

Nail in tiles with nibs in place. Cut those nails free. With single-lap tiles or inter-locking tiles, wedge up the tiles next to the damaged tiles. Then undo the interlocking joints.  

Step 2: Position New Tile  

Position new tile. Hooks the nibs over the furring strip. Make sure it’s attached securely. Remove wedges from the adjoining tiles. Check if the new tile if it’s sitting with the other tiles. Using a hacksaw blade, cut the nails. Use clips when securing the strip of lead to the furring strip.  

Put the new slate so the old one is replaced. Make sure the position is secure. To do that, bend a clip of lead over the new slate. Use a chisel or hammer to remove and split the broken shingle. To form a “handle”, wind tape around the hacksaw blade’s end. Use a blade to but the shingle’s nails.  

Position the new shingle. To keep it secured in place, use the nails as close to the row. Seal the shingle’s edges with a sealant. To lever up the nails, use a pry bar. Remove the nails.  

Step 3: Finishing Task  

Place the end of the pry bar to the nails so you can hide them. Hit the nails farther down. Use the bar’s shank to knock the nails in. The valley’s roof can be constructed from plastic, tin or special valley shingles and tiles.  

Last Tip:  

If you want to repair a valley with leaking problem, it will involve stripping back the slates, tiles or shingles from the edge of the valley. This way, the structure is exposed to you and you can immediately replace the damaged part. Coverings like tiles will be cut to a size of the valley course. To put them back in order, put numbers in them using a chalk.  

Remember though that not all valleys have flashing. Some are made with shingles or shaped tiles cut to fit. So before you repair the valley, assess what kind of valley you have so you would know what requirements you need. The types of valleys are: lead valley, asphalt open valley and single woven valley.
