2008 Spelling Bee Information
School Spelling Bees: April 18, 2008
1. The word for each child will be pronounced correctly. The word will be used in a sentence for grades 1 -4. In grades 5 - 8 the word will be used in a sentence for clarification or if the student asks.
Child says word <30 seconds>.
Child spells word <30 seconds>.
Child says word again.
*Speak loud and clear.
*Students should ask if they didn't recognize the word.
2. If the word is a homonym: it will be used in a sentence automatically.
3. Retracing, (stopping and starting over), is allowed as long as students do not change what they are repeating.
4. Misspelled words - The judge says "Sorry, that is incorrect." The next word is given to the next speller.
5. No talking is allowed among contestants.
6. Elimination Process (between final two spellers):
*When a word is misspelled, the next speller receives the same word. If he/she spells it correctly, the first speller receives one more word. If the word is spelled correctly there is a winner. If not, the process is repeated.
7. Before beginning to spell a student may ask for a definition of the word for clarification. He/She can also ask for a sentence and/or for the word to be repeated.
